During my recent visit to Kythira, I discovered that the answer is not only breathtaking landscapes or cultural heritage. It is accessibility by design.

Working on the URBACT CALL Accessible Cities for ALL network (funded under the URBACT programme) has fundamentally changed how I experience places. I now look beyond attractions and ask a simple question: Who is actually able to enjoy them?

Despite its challenging topography, @Kythera has invested in a coherent accessibility strategy through the “Accessible Kythera” initiative. With four accessible beaches equipped with Seatrack systems and supporting infrastructure, the island demonstrates that accessibility is not an afterthought; it is a strategic investment in social inclusion and sustainable tourism.

The most valuable lesson is that accessibility is not simply about infrastructure or regulatory compliance. It is about creating destinations that work for everyone and recognizing inclusion as a driver of quality, competitiveness, and resilience.

Kythera proves that becoming an inclusive destination is not determined by geography or size, but by vision, long-term planning, and political commitment.

Perhaps this is the future of tourism: destinations designed not only to be admired, but to be experienced by everyone.
